Background of the Study
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Zamfara State face numerous challenges that adversely affect their mental health. Forced to flee their homes due to conflict, natural disasters, or other crises, IDPs often endure traumatic experiences, prolonged uncertainty, and a lack of basic necessities. These stressors contribute to a high prevalence of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Aliyu, 2023). In Zamfara State, the displacement crisis has strained public health resources, leaving many IDPs with limited access to mental health services and support systems.
The loss of home, social networks, and livelihood opportunities creates an environment in which psychological distress is almost inevitable. IDPs are often housed in overcrowded camps or informal settlements with inadequate facilities, further exacerbating feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Moreover, the stigma associated with mental illness and the cultural barriers to seeking psychological help contribute to the underutilization of available services (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite the recognized need for mental health support among IDPs, there is a dearth of targeted interventions tailored to their unique experiences and challenges.
This study aims to appraise the mental health challenges faced by internally displaced persons in Zamfara State by assessing the prevalence of mental health disorders, identifying contributing factors, and evaluating the effectiveness of existing support services. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, incorporating quantitative assessments using standardized mental health scales and qualitative interviews with IDPs and service providers. The findings are expected to provide critical insights into the specific mental health needs of IDPs and inform the development of culturally appropriate, sustainable interventions that can alleviate psychological distress and improve overall well-being (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Internally displaced persons in Zamfara State experience high levels of psychological distress due to the traumatic nature of displacement, compounded by poor living conditions and limited access to mental health services. The challenges of displacement—such as loss of property, social isolation, and uncertainty about the future—contribute to a high prevalence of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Aliyu, 2023). Despite the urgent need for mental health support, IDPs often face barriers such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, stigma surrounding mental illness, and a shortage of trained mental health professionals. As a result, many displaced individuals do not receive the help they require, leading to prolonged suffering and diminished quality of life (Ibrahim, 2024).
The absence of comprehensive mental health interventions for IDPs in Zamfara State is a major public health concern. Existing programs are often underfunded, poorly coordinated, and not tailored to the unique cultural and situational needs of the displaced population. This gap in service provision not only exacerbates individual suffering but also has broader social implications, as untreated mental health issues can hinder community recovery and long-term social integration.
This study seeks to address these challenges by systematically evaluating the mental health status of IDPs in Zamfara State and identifying the key factors contributing to their psychological distress. The research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving mental health services and support programs for this vulnerable population, thereby mitigating the long-term adverse effects of displacement on mental well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on IDPs residing in selected camps and settlements in Zamfara State. Data will be collected using mental health screening tools, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations include possible underreporting due to stigma and challenges in accessing all IDP locations.
